Miles for Smiles: Half Marathon for Ichthyosis Support Donate Dear Friends and Family, We are thrilled to announce that Ioannis, Ezer, Petros, and George will be running a half marathon on the 10th of May to support the Ichthyosis Support Group (ISG). Ichthyosis is a rare genetic skin disorder that affects many individuals and families, requiring lifelong daily management to prevent discomfort, infections, and complications. Unlike more common skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis, ichthyosis never goes away, and in severe forms, it can even be life-threatening. Beyond the physical challenges, living with a visible skin condition can have a significant emotional and psychological impact. As a dermatology doctor working in Genodermatoses and Epidermolysis Bullosa at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Ioannis works closely with patients with ichthyosis, helping them manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life. Working with these patients has been a deeply moving and humbling experience. Witnessing their resilience, strength, and perseverance in the face of daily challenges has been incredibly inspiring. Many patients and families navigate these difficulties with remarkable courage, but the journey can be overwhelming without the right support system. This is where the ISG plays a vital role—not only by providing practical advice and emotional support but also by fostering a strong, understanding community where individuals and families can connect, share experiences, and feel less alone. This idea first came to life during a lively pub conversation after one of our volleyball sessions, where Ioannis shared a powerful story of an ichthyosis patient whose determination and resilience left a lasting impact on him. Their journey highlighted not only the daily struggles and challenges of living with ichthyosis but also the incredible strength and perseverance required to overcome them. It was a reminder of the importance of recognising these struggles, amplifying their voices, and supporting those affected. Inspired by this, we quickly realised that we had an opportunity to raise awareness and make a real impact—and so, the idea of running a half marathon for ISG was born. May is Ichthyosis Awareness Month, making this the perfect time to highlight the challenges faced by those living with ichthyosis and the incredible work ISG does to support them. We invite you to join us in making a difference by: a) Raising awareness of this rare condition and the challenges it brings. b) Donating to help ISG continue their vital work—from providing emotional support to funding research for better treatments. Your generous contributions, no matter the size, will bring us one step closer to improving the lives of those affected by ichthyosis. Thank you for your support and encouragement as we take on this challenge. Together, we can make a positive impact and show our solidarity with the ichthyosis community. Warm regards, Ioannis, Ezer, Petros, and George Ioannis Theocharopoulos Manage Cookie Preferences
